birthday weekend

This past weekend was a birthday extravaganza. Audrey turned 3 on the 27th, and Wade and I both have our birthdays on the 28th. It's crazy having all of us crammed together like that, but kind of great too.

On Friday, I hung out with Audrey at home, like I usually do. One thing you should know about Audrey is that she changes her clothes 23849723894 times a day. I went upstairs and found her throwing all of her clothes onto the floor, and standing in her underwear and a pair of leg warmers.

And then she was sitting on the Barbie couch and wearing those Harry Potter glasses that are by her feet, and I wanted to squeeze her for how cute all of it was. She got annoyed with me for asking her to put the glasses back on so I could take her picture, and flat out refused.

Then I tried to get her down for a nap in the "big bed" (what she calls my bed) and we took a few silly pictures in there before nap time. What the pictures do not show is that she was so keyed up that you would swear I only feed her Pop Tarts and Red Bull, and she was squealing like crazy.

That night, Wade and I hired a sitter and went out for dinner alone for the first time since we've had Audrey. It was weird to not be telling anyone to stop messing around and just eat their food, or to sit down because it's eating time and not running around time. We got to eat our dinner and talk to each other and it was fantastic. And the place we went to had a gluten-free menu that actually was awesome instead of just being like, "order this without anything on it" like most places do. This place took the whole GF thing very seriously and the food was amazing.

I also had 1and ½  glasses of red wine and am certain that I am allergic to the sulfites in it, because I was so drunk I couldn't stand up by myself. I had to have Wade escort me to the bathroom because I had to pee so bad but was really nervous about being the stupid drunk girl who falls down in the restaurant. I mean, I wasn't just a little tipsy - the entire room was wobbly to me and I was trying really hard to focus because I think drunk people are gross. For some reason, only wine does that to me. If I had hard liquor, I would have been fine. So I think it's the sulfites in wine that jack me up, and not the alcohol content.

When we got back, Julian wanted to take our picture, and Audrey hopped in.

See Julian's smartass face? This is the second picture with him - because the first one, he was doing his standard zombie face where he rolls his eyes to the back of his head and makes his jaw go slack. He does it for every picture lately, and while it is very funny, it makes it difficult to take a decent picture.

This was Audrey's birthday cake. I saw the ombre cake idea on Pinterest and figured I could pull it off. It turned out to be the easiest cake I've ever decorated, but probably the prettiest. It was seriously just drawing circles with frosting.

The birthday girl spinning in her party dress:
(Do I even need to mention that she changed her clothes 3 more times that evening before we even had cake?)

The best big brother ever, dancing with his little sister:

The Meeps are all birthdayed out for another year.

I so enjoy your pictures! You all seem so happy. I mean, it is obvious how much fun you guys are. Also? Um. That cake looks amazing. You are just so talented, friend.

Another thing... about the wine. It has the same effect on me! But I never thought about the sulfites being a problem. One glass of wine makes me tipsy, two flat out drunk. And the next day... migraine central. Just so not worth it for me, but I always seem to forget that when I'm out with friends. Beer seems so much more forgiving for me. Must be the sulfites! You're a genius!

Haaa! I love that you remembered that my Pottery Barn rug is douchey. <3

Thanks, Lauren! We try to be fun. But I only document the fun stuff. I don't want to let the authorities know about all the hard labor in the fields I make my kids do or anything. :)

Dude. Wine is janky. I even liked the wine I had Friday night, despite previously claiming that I dislike wine. But it got me stupid drunk, which is never cute. I am only guessing about the sulfites, but I know it makes my face crazy red pretty quickly too, and I've heard that that is a sulfite thing. I should probably google around a bit on the subject.

Thank you, Kori! xo!

I followed this recipe from Whisk Kid (it's down the page just a bit, after the cupcake recipe) and if it seems too simple, it's because she links to a previous post where she describes in great detail about how to make Swiss meringue buttercream frosting. The white chocolate version is really only adding a bit of melted (and cooled) white chocolate to the frosting after it's all made. It looks kind of intimidating, but I swear to you it isn't once you do it. Also, I doubled the recipe and it was the perfect amount. http://www.whisk-kid.com/2009/08/impulse.html

Becca! Thank you for saying I look hot. You are always full of nice things to say. Which is why you are the most excellent sisterwife ever. You weren't flakey at all! I totally didn't get your email until later, so I was the one who probably seemed like the flake. I'll round up some Juju clothes and let you know what I've got stashed for Pete. See you this weekend!

Anything that has to do with egg whites intimidates me, but I'll try it, and it will look just like your cake, right?

Thanks for the recipe!

Allison Wilson said...

Me too. I didn't do that recipe for SO long because of the egg whites. Because egg whites are skeezy and gross, right? And the idea of getting poisoned by frosting isn't appealing at all. What helped me a lot with it was having a candy thermometer and making sure I kept a close eye on the temperature. And this last batch, I nearly ruined because the eggs started to scramble just a tiny bit and I was dropping the f-bomb like crazy - but I solved the whole problem by dumping the entire mixture into a bowl through a strainer and getting out the hard egg bits. Blehhhh. It turned out awesome though.

Ok, have I said this before? You have really hot eyebrows. Love them (also the rest of you, very pretty. I am big on eyebrow envy though). Secondly, wow that cake. Thirdly we also have the same kitchen as Audrey does, only red. So yeah.

Thank you! It's like the one thing that Baby Jesus gave me that I don't have to put any effort into. I just have awesome brows. Everything else though, that's constant upkeep. :)

I have seen the red kitchen and think it might be even cooler than the pink one! Does Soleil pull the little sink out of it all the time? Audrey takes it out, fills it up with water in the bathroom, and then gets a big sloppy mess all over her room and I scold her every time that the tiny kitchen is only for pretend. She also frequently steals our salt shaker and dumps salt all over the stovetop.

I would do bad things to that beautiful cake.
